April 02, 2008: We are sad to say that yet another member of the Ayers family has passed away. Mary Ruth (Ayers) Johns (b: April 1912) was the g-granddaughter of William Henry Barlow (Barlar); granddaughter of Mary A. (Barlow) Ayers; and daughter of John Harvey Ayers and Alice (Musset) Ayers. Cousin Marguerite Johnson has written to tell us that her Aunt Ruth was 95 when she died in her home state of Texas on March 30th -- little more than 1-1/2 months after the death of Ruth's younger brother, John Howard Ayers, on February 5th of this year. We extend our condolences to the family and invite you to click here - PHOTO - to see pictures of Ruth and John and their family; and to click here, Mary A. (Barlow) Ayers to see their lineage page.

March 18, 2008: We have just learned of a significant new DNA exact match at the 67-Marker level, existing between Larry Joe Barlar and Robert Charles Trickel. This means that we can be 89.79% certain that the common ancestor shared came within the last 4 generations. See the November 05, 2007 and May 07, 2005 entries for additional information about the Robert Charles Trickel relationship and the Goff connection.
February 05, 2008: John Howard Ayers (b: June 1918) was the great-grandson of William Henry Barlow (Barlar), grandson of Mary A. (Barlow) Ayers and son of John Harvey Ayers and Alice (Musset) Ayers. December 06, 2007: Frankie W. Barlow of Coeburn, VA recently posted a message in our Guestbook and has since expressed an interest in having his DNA tested to see which of the Barlow lineages may be his own. If he decides to follow through with it, we will post the results of his test as soon as they've been returned.

November 14, 2007: Missing Photo. Pictures of all the children of William Henry Barlow (Barlar) and Susan Frances Phillips are now posted on this website, except one; and once again, on behalf of his descendants who have been asking about it, we are hoping that if any of you out there has a photo of Alfred Jordan Barlow, that you will please send us a copy so we can post it for all to enjoy. Thanks!
November 11, 2007: Veterans Day was first celebrated in the United States in 1919, to honor those who served in World War One. It was then called Armistice Day, marking the truce that ended the war on November 11, 1918. The day is also marked by many other nations around the world, where it is known variously as Remembrance Day, Armistice Day and Veterans Day. We would like to take this opportunity to remember and pay tribute to all those who have served in our country's military.
November 08, 2007: Correction. A correction has been applied to the ancestry of Jerry Barlar - see the BarLARs and BarLOWs page. There are two Jerry Barlars from the Alfred Jordan Barlow (Barlar) branch, but one descends by Cornelius Brown Barlow (Barlar), while the other descends by John Cahal Barlow (Barlar). This particular Jerry Barlar descends from Cornelius; and we appreciate the message we recently received from Katherine Anita Kat (Barlar) Anderson giving us the correct information.
November 05, 2007: If you have taken a look at the messages in our Guestbook lately, you may have noticed the most recent one from Robyn O. Trickel Dowd. Robyn's brother's DNA was indeed an exact match with Larry Joe Barlar's at the 37-marker level. Beyond any doubt, they are our Barlow (Barlar) relatives and we're delighted to hear from them. Scroll down to the May 07, 2005 entry on this page for more details about the Goff / Barlow relationship.

A recent photo of some of the Ayers family members has been added to Pg 23 of the group album. They are descendants of Mary A. Barlow, Ayres (the 1st born of William Henry Barlow/Barlar). May 19, 2005: Page Update. The Wm W. Barlow page in the JOHN BARLOW of Lawrence County, TN family tree section has been updated with additional information.
May 07, 2005: More DNA Updates. It is our understanding that around 1820, in the western region of Tennessee, three young BarLOW males were taken in to be raised by a family named Goff. Whether the three boys had been orphaned, placed in the Goff's care on an intended temporary basis, or abandoned by their parents altogether is not yet clear, but as time passed their Barlow surname was dropped and they and their descendants became known as Goff (sometimes spelled Gawf). Recently, a 37-marker DNA genetic test was conducted on James Edward Goff, a direct descendant of one of those three Barlow boys; and the result of the test is an Exact match (37 out of 37 markers) to our William Henry Barlow (Barlar) family. The task now is to attempt to learn as many details as possible about what actually happened in that early time period, and to try to determine where the boys came from and the names of their parents. In the meantime, on behalf of all the William Henry Barlow (Barlar) family, we extend a warm welcome to our newly discovered relatives, James Edward Goff (Barlow) and all his family; and we invite anyone who has any additional knowledge about the history of the Barlow/Goff association to contact us.
May 06, 2005: DNA Update. Correction: The DNA match between the Alfred Hirton Barlow of NC lineage and the William Henry Barlow (Barlar) lineage was not an Exact 37 out of 37 marker match as previously stated. The actual match was a -1 genetic distance (36 of 37 markers matched exactly), which means that the two families are closely related and almost certainly share a common ancestor.
May 06, 2005: New Photos. We are very pleased to be able to present new photographs regarding the out-standing military service of Claude A. Waldrop during WW II. Claude is the grand-son of John Maultsby Doc Barlow/Barlar. To view his military pictures, please click here ; and for a present day photo of Claude, scroll to the bottom of Pg 18 in the Barlar Group Album.
May 05, 2005: Update. The more extensive 37-marker DNA test has been conducted on the representa-tive from the Alfred Hirton Barlow of NC family, and the results show that they are an Exact Match to our William Henry Barlow (Barlar) lineage. See the DNA Results page for additional information.
April 28, 2005: New Photos. Many thanks to Jenny Cummings, Nickols (g.granddaughter of John Maultsby (Doc) Barlow/Barlar), whose recent arduous scouring of the countryside outside of Austin, Texas was finally rewarded by the discovery of Mary A. Barlow, Ayers' grave-site. For approximately 92 years, the neglected and occasionally vandalized area has been Mary's final resting place; and we would like to think she would be pleased to know that her blood relatives have cared enough to find and document her site. Jenny has graciously provided photos, which are available for viewing by clicking here.
February 07, 2005: We wish to extend our heartfelt sympathies to Rayburn Cole Ray Waldrop, whose wife, Betty (Melton) Waldrop, suddenly passed away last Thursday evening. December 02, 2004: Our Newly Discovered Relatives. When you click on any of these links, it will open in a new window, making it easier for you to return to larrybarlar.com. Important Reminder. Precisely how they were related is a subject of ongoing research.

May 30, 2004: N E W S! The test results are back, and a summary of the findings has been posted. DNA Results . Additionally, Larry Booth Barlar (See July 04, 2003 entry on this page) is scheduled to submit a sample of his DNA in order to determine if his lineage -- descending from his g.grandfather, John S. Barlow -- is related to our William Henry Barlow line. It will likely take a month or two for the results of his tests to be returned, but as soon as the report is received, it will be posted right away. By providing their DNA samples for testing, these two Larrys are greatly helping to further the research of the family's history.
May 18, 2004: New Photo. Had it not been for Walcie Rowena (Barlar) Carpenter's early efforts towards main- taining a chronicle of the growing Barlar family, the difficult task of tracing our roots would be far greater. September 13, 2003: It was a pleasure to hear from William Daniel Dan Barlar, Jr.,(descendant of Jeftus 'Smith' / Floyd Jeftus Barlar) who submitted corrections for his family lineage and also let us know that
his parents, William Daniel Barlar and Carol Cole (Tinnon) Barlar, celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary (50 yrs) on September 13, 2003. Congratulations to them and thanks to Dan for the up- dated information. His email address has been added to the Directory page of this website.
July 04, 2003: Larry Booth Barlar of Lewisburg and Columbia, TN., was a police officer for 27 years in Lewisburg and is currently a private investigator (Barlar Investigative Services). He is from a different branch than the William Henry Barlar (Barlow) descendants; and we were very pleased when he contacted us to let us know that he had recently viewed our website and provided us with information about his particular lineage. Every bit of data we can gather is important in putting the overall family history together. His g.grandparents: John S. Barlow and Josie Cathaline Barlow. His grandparents: Clarence Bernie Barlar and Varena Ann 'Annie' (Bray) Barlar. His parents: Brown Wilkes Barlar and Decie Allene (Bonds) Barlar. Larry Booth's email address has been added to the Directory page, and we look forward to hearing from him often.
